6 Free Saturation Plugins That Will Add Color, Warmth & Grit to Your Mixes
Jun 09, 2025Want to add vibe and character to your tracks—without spending a dime?
Whether you're mixing a tight drum loop, warming up vocals, or just want your mix to sound more "finished," saturation is your friend. But not all saturation plugins are created equal.
In this post, I’ll walk you through six of my favorite free saturation plugins, including a couple that are subtle tone shapers… and one that’s basically a distortion monster with a glitchy backstory (yep, that’s number six).
Let’s get started.
1. FET Drive by Analog Obsession – Bright, Punchy, and Free
This one’s a beast.
FET Drive gives you Tone, Drive, Mix, and Output controls—everything you need to dial in parallel saturation or go all-in.
What I love about this one: the Tone knob lets you bring out the top-end of your drums without using EQ. It’s bright, musical, and just enough grit to cut through a mix.
You’ll find this plugin works great on drums and instruments that need a little more presence without sounding over-processed.

2. Kilohearts Distortion – Endless Possibilities in One Knob
Part of the Kilohearts Essentials Bundle, this free plugin is packed with flexible algorithms, a Mix knob, Spread, Bias, Dynamics, and even a Dice function for random surprises.
Want subtle warmth? Easy.
Want your drums to break apart and growl? You got it.
With built-in presets and creative randomization, this one’s ideal for both seasoned sound designers and plug-and-play producers.

3. IVGI2 by Klanghelm – Clean, Classy, and Understated
This one is smooth.
IVGI2 gives you Input/Output gain, Drive, and a unique feature: a Frequency Bias control that lets you decide where on the spectrum the saturation should live—lows, highs, or neutral.
That’s a level of control you usually find in paid plugins.
Perfect for glue, warmth, and that barely-there analog feel.

4. Softube Saturation Knob – A Classic Freebie for a Reason
This was my first ever third-party plugin—and it’s still holding up.
It’s super simple: Input, Output, and one big Saturation knob. You can choose to keep the highs or lows clean, depending on your track.
No mix knob? True. But I use it on a send for parallel processing and it works like a charm.
Use it on drums, vocals, or synths when you want instant grit without overthinking it.

5. Rust – Hiss, Dust, and Lo-Fi Mojo
This is a tape emulation plugin, and it does more than just tape-style compression.
You can dial in hiss, dust, age, and tape movement. It’s like adding vinyl or cassette charm to your digital world.
Best part? You can isolate the noise—use just the hiss or dust to fill out a sparse mix. I use it subtly on drums to give the illusion of density.

6. Obliterate by Newfangled Audio – Chaos in a Plugin
Okay, buckle up.
This plugin was supposed to be a filter plugin, but a coding error turned it into a destructive saturation monster. And the devs just… rolled with it.
It’s called Obliterate, and yeah—it does that.
Presets like “Grandma’s House” and “The Devil’s Horn” will transform a simple drum loop into something absolutely mental.
Use it only in parallel—because subtlety is not an option here. But man, it’s inspiring.

These six saturation plugins give you everything from subtle warmth to total chaos—without spending a cent.
And when used wisely, saturation is what glues your mix together, adds energy, and makes your drums, vocals, and instruments come alive.
So go try a couple of these, use your ears, and stack them in creative ways.
